Anne Sexton and her words captured me as I studied the relationship between women and creativity. She was an awful person: impulsive, ego-centric, infantile, abusive, dependent, promiscuous. Yet, despite her self-proclaimed madness, she created astonishing poetry. She mined the unconscious, producing poems full of the vernacular, the vulgar and metaphor. The power of her words to stitch her life together, at least for a time, still echo in the hearts of her readers today.
